To call this beautiful little log house a "nest box"
is a crime, because most of what we've seen called a nest box was
downright awful looking. So you can use this playhouse for a nest
box, but don't call it that, OK? It's a huge playhouse!
We'd like to emphasize this nester is much bigger than the little
ones you see for gerbils and mice 'cause gliders should live with
other gliders. The log is a full 8" long and is 5"
in diameter with a 3 1/4" wide hole bored through the whole log
- this nest will handle 2, 3, or even 4 gliders, depending on how
big they are. No "half-logs" here, because gliders
often like things hung up high in the cage and a half-log isn't
going to work very well for that!
When keeping exotic pets in captive environments, the best thing we can do for them is to emulate their free range environment.
This is what they instinctively know. This is what they like.
In the wild, sugar gliders would live in tree hollows. So what better home than an actual hollowed out log as their own private
hideout?
Gliders like to change where they sleep from time to time, so do them a favor and give them options. Sometimes they may choose a nice
fluffy fleece pouch, sometimes they may want to hang out in a "log cabin".
You can make your own fun nesting material by cutting up old sweatshirts or baby blankets. BUT,
don't stuff them in the log, let the gliders do that. It's an enriching activity for them AND they can do it just the way they like it.
For cleaning, we soak our logs in a solution of warm water and Scooters
Choice for at least ten minutes ... and then we let them dry COMPLETELY in the sun.
This will clean and disinfect. To control odors, you can spray
PureAyre directly on and in the log.
We've used these all natural, real tree logs in a variety of different ways. We've used them as is, placed on the bottom of the cage, but our favorite way to use is to hang the log to create a "swinging tree" effect.
You can get some stainless steel eye hooks from the hardware store and just screw them into the top of the log.
Another fun idea is to string the log up using a rope. Just pass the rope through the middle. The log can slide on the rope for more enriching
fun. And to create the ultimate log cabin in the woods, wrap the log with
Leafy Vines.
Let the foliage drape over both openings.
How natural is that?
