The Reptarium ®
by Apogee is the most highly recommended and used sugar glider cage among glider owners
who travel. This lightweight, compact travel accessory opens up to a spacious 29x29x48
inch enclosure just perfect for the sugar glider on the go - a
whopping 175 gallon size. And we are pleased to offer a whole lotta cage for a little
money. This cage sells in PetsMart for an affordable $119.99, but Arnold insists
we buy a bunch of them so we can offer special pricing on this monster size travel home.
The Reptarium snaps apart quickly and easily, can be carried and stored in a tidy
tube shape of about 5 inches around and 34 inches tall - weighing a mere 5 pounds.
Reptariums have a snap assembly design that assembles and disassembles quickly.
Despite the light weight of the Reptarium, the large footprint prevents tip-overs and is
quite stable for normal sugar glider activity.
The lightweight plastic tube construction is covered in a screen mesh zippered enclosure.
Sugar glider nails do not stick to the screen surface and they navigate flawlessly
around the Reptarium.
As a matter of fact, some have reported the bouncy surface just seems like a
whole lot more fun for sugar gliders, as evidenced by their higher activity levels
- isn't that what vacation is about? Fun?
The Reptarium not only breaks down quickly for easy storage, but
the outer cover is machine washable! You can just toss it into any
standard washing machine and presto, the Reptarium
is perfectly clean for storage until next use!
Because the mesh surface is tighter in the Reptarium
than the openings found on traditional wire cages, there is no need to
worry about food or other mess being flung around the hotel room.
Food and droppings will stay inside of the enclosure, so when you checkout you don't have to worry
about any animal mess left about the room. We've also found that the tight weave mesh keeps any
smells associated with sugar gliders trapped within the enclosure, another big plus for the
traveling family!
As is our policy, SunCoast thoroughly reviewed this product before offering it to the
public, and like most products, we do believe there are a few features that
you need to be aware of in order to completely protect the safety of your sugar gliders.
Reptariums
were developed for use with reptiles, probably obvious from the name of the product.
For this reason, the first recommendation we make is that you only use the
Reptarium as a travel cage option or as temporary housing while cleaning permanent habitats, rebuilding habitats,
housing unexpected new arrivals, etc. We have heard reports of some sugar gliders being able to
chew through the mesh creating possible breach holes from which they
can escape. So check the mesh enclosure frequently to make sure your little fuzz flyers aren't planning an escape.
Additionally, if you are in the habit of feeding live crickets to
your gliders, crickets can chew through mesh fabrics quite quickly, so we recommend that you feed alternate sources
of food other than crickets, or feed them crickets while outside of the Reptarium. If they must have crickets,
perhaps ZooMed's Can O Crickets will satiate their cricket need while
traveling.
There are several options you may want to consider to catch any droppings or liquid spills
when using the Reptarium.
A lot of people seem to like the OOPs pads sold at Walmart. OOPs
are puppy training pads that are used directly under the Reptarium
and do a good job soaking up moisture. If you cannot find OOPs, then high absorbent
paper towels would be a second option, but they are not as absorbable as OOPs.
When washing the Reptarium, its best to let the screen
mesh dry while on the frame of the habitat. The screen may emit an odor as drying, but once dry that odor will
disappear! Do not use bleach on the mesh cover, it may degrade the fabric.
There are a few challenges that must be overcome to create the perfect sugar glider
environment. One of these is where and how to hang water bottles, toys, pouches, feed cups, etc.
We've found the 175 gallon Reptarium
has the best frame configuration to support these modifications.
If you cut rectangular pieces of either PVC coated wire, PVC lattice or vinyl mesh, you can make some vertical
"shelving" which provides "clip on space" for water bottles,
pouches, toys, and the like. We recommend that if you make these modifications, you cut the shelving to about a 5
inch width and connect it to the tough plastic frame using nylon cable ties.
This will allow you to remove the shelves easily during disassembly.
So are ya ready to hit the road, Jack?
