One thing professional animal handlers consistently find about
exotic pets in general and sugar gliders in particular is this: they
are happiest when they are provided the opportunity to discover new
things and ideas, like the do in the wild. In other words,
they get bored with the same stuff in their cages all the time.
This means you can impact the overall well-being of your sugar
gliders by changing things up a bit on a regular basis, a topic
known as "environmental
enrichment" among folks who work in the exotic animal
field.
Arnold and Lisa have been squabbling over what to call this toy for weeks.
Lisa brought this fun, colorful plaything for Arnold because she
just couldn't resist. You see, before her life as SunCoast's Sugar Mama
Extraordinaire, Lisa was an accountant. So it's no surprise that this toy represents a union of her two favorite things: sugar gliders and
numbers.
She believes the perfect name for the toy is the
"Sugar Glider Abacus Swing". Our fearless leader
Arnold clamored for the toy name to be "Arnold's Spinulus
Package". While Arnold admitted tough economic times may call for a BIG abacus, he didn't like Lisa's suggested toy name because
"not all suggies like math". And who knows his customers better than Arnold?
Nevertheless, a unanimous decision was made to just go with the manufacturer's name of
"Slide 'N Spin". Not so flashy, but descriptive enough.
And that's that.
The QA team tested the toy starting on the top row. Some only moved one
of the acrylic shapes; others whacked 'em all across in tandem.
Of the three rows, this one may be the most challenging for your sugar glider because the
shapes fit rather closely to the rod. On to the middle row, where bright wooden shapes spin and slide, the QA team continued to satisfy their curious natures. Some put both hands around a wooden shape to simply
rotate it around the axis. Others (like QA team leader, Arnold) continued with the right / left
rhythm they pursued in the 1st row.
On the last of the three decorated rows, there are plastic hearts.
Could they represent some "sweets for your
sweet"? Or perhaps the heart-shapes may remind us of Valentine's Day and the ones we
love? The plastic hearts are the easiest to play with because they are
lightweight and spin any which way. And the hearts are also removable for days when "your sweet ain't acting so sweet", or
when you just want to offer a plain bar for perching, tumbling and /
or spinning around on.
After aggressive twirling, sliding, jumping and various other
investigating, the QA team deemed this toy to be a safe, fun and pretty
addition to any glider's habitat. Thus the "Slide N
Spin" was added to Arnold's arsenal of glider safe toys. The toy's dimensions are 8"H x 6"W (wooden part only).
At the top of the toy is a nickel-plated steel pear clip and chain, which measures about 4" in height.
The clip allows allows the
toy to hang from a cage bar.
But then Arnold hit the entire glider gang with the reason why he'd been pushing his "Spinulus Package"
name so hard. Turns out our fearless leader had been working through the days in his Ivory Tower Cage, negotiating a killer deal on these toys. Using his massive patagium purchasing power,
he worked out a way for SunCoast to pass along a great deal to his pals out in the glider community!
You rock, Arnold.
The frame is made of wood that has been dyed using
FDA-approved food colors. Because this toy has an outer wood frame,
it is not recommended for "over-achieving sugar gliders"
who have a tendency to quickly wear toys down with aggressive
chewing. We
encourage you to check the wood frame from time to time to ensure
that wear and tear has not made a safe toy a potential hazard.
Aggressive chewing sugar gliders are likely more
suited to a nylon toy like PuzzleSAURUS
or acrylic toys such as Curlygig or Rattle
'N Roll which may be a better fit with your pets'
personality.
Arnold's deal is definitely a welcome surprise. But a "Spinulus
package"? Well, every bit helps. Call us crazy, but we're much more likely to call it a
Sugar Glider "Stimulus package", although we think that phrase may already
be reserved. But you get the picture!
Since the manufacturer of this toy created different colors
of wood frames & rods with a
variety of colored shapes on each row, we are unable to promise you any specific combination.
But we can promise you'll receive either yellow with red rods (large
picture) or one of the other four bright and cheery color
combinations of frame and rods pictured in the smaller picture above
left!
